Cursive Writing or Not?

Should students be taught cursive handwriting in school?  Or should we focus more on the Core Curriculum?  Read the following article, post your opinion, and list one reason to support your opinion.

  1. Jennifer,
I am really glad we are going to discuss this topic! I think that everyone needs to know how to write in cursive; it is important. I say this because when students grow up and get their own checks, they have to know how to sign in cursive rather than in print. There is so much that we use in our world that involves cursive writing. I don’t really know how I feel about cursive writing being taken out of the core standards now. I am sure it is a relief but how are students going to learn if they are not taught. Parents could teach them but I am not 100% optimistic about that happening. The article that you provided gave me more of an outlook about why it is a good thing it is no longer in the core standards. For example, children with disabilities have a harder time trying to learn cursive than others. That would take a toll on the teachers, child, and parents. Great topic, Jennifer! KAllsup

    1. Katie,
Thank you for posting. I teach fourth grade, and until this year, we were not "required" to teach cursive or have our students complete assignments in cursive. It has been a challenge, but most of my students have picked up on it quite quickly (especially my girls). I only have a few students who are struggling, but have made great progress. I have to admit, it does slow things down, as far as assignments getting completed in a timely manner, but it is getting better. It can be frustrating, as a teacher, but it's great when you can see your students become successful cursive writers. Jennifer

  2. Jennifer,
I think that it's important for students to learn how to write in cursive. Unfortunately, I think that we'll see cursive writing fade out due to technology. We may sign things in cursive writing now, but I've seen many companies begin to change over to the "e-sign." I think companies are looking for ways to save money and people are wanting to get things done quickly. Technology is drastically changing things. In all reality, most students are texting more than they're writing.
    Good discussion topic!

  3. I feel that writing is important, but cursive writing is not something students have to know how to do anymore. With the way technology is advancing students do not have to take notes with pen and paper anymore. Cursive writing is faster and easier for someone who is taking notes, but now we can use iPads and other devices to record or take notes. We probably should be more concerned with typing skills.

    1. Lauren,
Teaching typing is a great skill to teach the students, especially at an early age. I didn't learn until high school, but we didn't use computers like our students today. There is actually a free program called "Interactive Learning" where the students can practice typing. Great idea!

    2. Lauren,
I agree that technology has changed the way we view handwriting. I think that both skills are important. We need to be able to write, as well as type because our jobs will require us to do both.

  4. Jennifer,
I agree that it slows us down and assignments do not get finished in a timely manner. That is true! It does seem like girls, overall, grasp cursive writing quickly or at least it does to me. KAllsup

  5. I am kind of on the fence about this topic. As a teacher, I think students should at least be introduce to cursive writing. They will definitely need to be able to write their name in cursive in order to sing for things when they are older. However, as a student I remember hating the process of learning to write in cursive. I remember having to write an entire essay in cursive writing which slowed down my progress.
